The announcement

IRCC’s notice removes a separate work permit step for eligible international students completing placements required by their post-secondary program, including co-op and internships with institution-approved employers.

  • The change applies to eligible required student work placements.
  • IRCC says it will withdraw eligible active co-op work permit applications without action from the student.

What this means for you

Students considering a placement-based program should check the full eligibility rules. This is not a general expansion of work authorization.

Your next step

Confirm the placement requirements with your institution and read IRCC’s linked eligibility guidance.
